  • So back in the mid seventies..uh..
    I'm..uh..stopped touring for a while.
And of course I was 20 years old, I think in 1975.
    Pretty scary thought, isn't it?
Anyway, um, I moved to the Big Smoke, I moved to Sydney
Because I wanted to have a career and get experience playing in recording studios.
And I wanted to learn, I was so hungry for knowledge, as I always have been.
    And um...so I..auditioned and I got work.
The only..the only downside to what I was doing was that I was refused to few jobs.
    Because I couldn't read music and I still don't.
Uh, unfortunately, I'd love to be able to
but I'm too busy playing it to learn how to read it off paper.
So..So anyway, it hasn't hindered me that much.
    (Clapping...)
But I started, I've always been interested in songs. You know
I've never just, you know...thought about playing the guitar.
And....and you know, uh...trying to appeal to guitar players.
I've never ever thought that way.
I've always loved songs and singers and songwriters.
And I was always interested in song writing.
So...um...I always got book to play solos
because my solos for some reason seem to speak to people.
And that was a wonderful thing.
But I got a call one day from a producer of a television show.
And he said, well, we're going to go to air with this TV show,
but we're not happy with the music.
Do you think you could come up with something?
And I said, well, let me see a little bit of the program.
So I had look at the pilot of the show.
And I loved it. And I said "When do you need this?"
And he goes, "two o'clock". I said ok!
So I went out of the car, I got my acoustic guitar.
And I said, leave me alone for 10 minutes.
    And I wrote this song.
Anyway, he came back in a bit of a hurry
and he was carrying on his shoulder a reel to reel tape recorder and a microphone.
And he said, are you ready? Let me hear it. So I played it for him.
And he said, oh! It's exactly what we're looking for. He said, let's go !
And he turned the thing on..on the record and held the microphone up to my guitar in his office.
And that's what was on television for about 14 years.
So having said that, I thought tonight that I might play it acoustically
just for the mic to get that authentic sound for you.
    Here it is, Countrywide.
As Chet would say "As the composer intended"
